Settling the “Score’s”…

The Music Behind the Movie

imgThe Last Samurai2

Lately I’ve been into a lot of movie scores and their respective composers. I first got into them after watching The Last Samurai. I noticed I wasn’t only moved by the film itself (Tom Cruise put on a stellar performance!), but the music captured the emotional end as well. So, after taking in the film, I hurried down the closest music store and copped it.

Hans Zimmer (a legend in scoring…WAY too many scores to name that he’s done) composed the score of The Last Samurai. Beautiful stuff! Standout pieces are; “A Way Of Life”, “Spectres In The Fog” “A Hard Teacher”, “Idyll’s End” and “Red Warrior”.

the-dark-knightBatman Begins and The Dark Knight (both composed by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard) are fantastic scores as well (too many GREAT pieces to name…lol!)

The first Transformers score (Composed by Steve Jablonsky) is a masterpiece IMHO. Fav pieces are; “AUTOBOTS”, “THE ALL SPARK”, “OPTIMUS” and “ARRIVAL TO EARTH”.

I used to play Transformers on my mini DVD player, close the lid and listen with my headphones on just so I could hear the music (”Isn’t that weird?”….lol!) I inquired about the score but it was NOT available….WTH??? Checked online and come to find out that Warner Bros. didn’t even put out a score for it. An online petition was created. The demand so high, Warner FINALLY put it out.

The orchestral parts mixed with the choir is haunting, saddening yet moving all at the same time. Great stuff! Of course there’s a heavy influence from Batman Begins. That’s to be expected because Jablonsky studied under Zimmer.

transformers_2The 2nd Transformers movie – Revenge of The Fallen has some standout pieces such as “PRIME”, “INFINITE WHITE” and “THE MATRIX OF LEADERSHIP”…just to name a few.

There are of course tons of other classic scores out from yester year by their respective composers that are embedded in our subconscious. Classic such as STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, JAWS and SUPERMAN (All 4 scores composed by John Williams). GODFATHER (Nino Rota) etc.,

The cool thing about these scores is when you listen back without dialogue, action etc., you can envision the whole movie in your head.

Well, I’m gonna go listen to Memoirs of a Geshia now….lol! (John Williams, Yo Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman….CRAZY combo on this score!) Did you know, Ma and Pearlman performed for President Obama’s Inauguration? The piece, composed by John Williams, is called “Air and Simple Gifts”.

Peace,

Overceer
