Settling the “Score’s”…

The Music Behind the Movie

imgThe Last Samurai2

Lately I’ve been into a lot of movie scores and their respective composers. I first got into them after watching The Last Samurai. I noticed I wasn’t only moved by the film itself (Tom Cruise put on a stellar performance!), but the music captured the emotional end as well. So, after taking in the film, I hurried down the closest music store and copped it.

Hans Zimmer (a legend in scoring…WAY too many scores to name that he’s done) composed the score of The Last Samurai. Beautiful stuff! Standout pieces are; “A Way Of Life”, “Spectres In The Fog” “A Hard Teacher”, “Idyll’s End” and “Red Warrior”.

the-dark-knightBatman Begins and The Dark Knight (both composed by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard) are fantastic scores as well (too many GREAT pieces to name…lol!)

The first Transformers score (Composed by Steve Jablonsky) is a masterpiece IMHO. Fav pieces are; “AUTOBOTS”, “THE ALL SPARK”, “OPTIMUS” and “ARRIVAL TO EARTH”.

I used to play Transformers on my mini DVD player, close the lid and listen with my headphones on just so I could hear the music (”Isn’t that weird?”….lol!) I inquired about the score but it was NOT available….WTH??? Checked online and come to find out that Warner Bros. didn’t even put out a score for it. An online petition was created. The demand so high, Warner FINALLY put it out.

The orchestral parts mixed with the choir is haunting, saddening yet moving all at the same time. Great stuff! Of course there’s a heavy influence from Batman Begins. That’s to be expected because Jablonsky studied under Zimmer.

transformers_2The 2nd Transformers movie – Revenge of The Fallen has some standout pieces such as “PRIME”, “INFINITE WHITE” and “THE MATRIX OF LEADERSHIP”…just to name a few.

There are of course tons of other classic scores out from yester year by their respective composers that are embedded in our subconscious. Classic such as STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, JAWS and SUPERMAN (All 4 scores composed by John Williams). GODFATHER (Nino Rota) etc.,

The cool thing about these scores is when you listen back without dialogue, action etc., you can envision the whole movie in your head.

Well, I’m gonna go listen to Memoirs of a Geshia now….lol! (John Williams, Yo Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman….CRAZY combo on this score!) Did you know, Ma and Pearlman performed for President Obama’s Inauguration? The piece, composed by John Williams, is called “Air and Simple Gifts”.

So, like the rest of the world I saw “…Fallen” when it dropped in theatres this past June (Actually I saw it twice in IMAX! lol!) but it’s a different feeling when you OWN a copy of it. So I made the trek to Wal-Mart singing the Transformers theme song (just playing..lol!) and copped it the past Tuesday.

Now the actual movie (let’s be real) is not Oscar material AT ALL…lol! but, if you grew up with the Transformers cartoon, saw the first one, enjoy techy/action films, some nice eye candy (Megan Fox)…lol! you’re good. However, it is a tad too long. Felt like it was dragging a bit. Also those twins robots annoyed the hell outta me. They were waaaaaay to stereotypical. Not cool Michael Bay :-(

Since I already saw it twice I went right to the 2nd disc to watch all the behind the scenes, making of, interviews etc. Love that stuff! Man they really packed up the 2nd disc! 3 hours of extra material?! WHOA!

My fav scenes are the Forest Battle and the battle in the desert near the end. The attention to detail the animators put in these scenes and the interaction with humans is 2nd to none! The scenes in Egypt were beautiful as well (I NEED to go! WOW!) I would have liked to have seen some footage/interviews of the creator the score, Steve Jablonsky. Epic material!

All in all I’ll I enjoyed it and will be looking forward to Part 3 when it drops July 1st, 2011.

Peace,

FACEBOOK MUSIC?

It was only a matter of time before social networking giant FACEBOOK joined the online music business.

By Antony Bruno, Denver

Facebook later this week will launch a new content gifting service that will allow members to, among other things, buy and give digital music tracks to their friends.

The music element will be powered by Lala, which is the exclusive music vendor. Lala’s service allows users to stream any song in its catalog in full for free once. After the free taste, users must either buy the full MP3 for 89 cents or a “Websong” streaming-only version of the song for 10 cents.

All of these options carry over to the Facebook gifting service. Facebook users can buy either MP3s or streaming-only songs through the gifting system, paying a fee for each Facebook friend to whom the gift is sent. Facebook will handle all the billing via a credit system. Web-only streaming songs will cost 1 credit (the equivalent of 10 cents) or 9 credits for an MP3.

Once gifted, the action will appear in members’ news feeds, where other friends can see what song was gifted and have the opportunity to sample it in full for one time at no charge.

Web-only songs can be played on either Lala.com or via the gifts section on Facebook, while MP3s can be downloaded and played in any fashion and on any device.

Facebook will make the gifting service available to a small segment of Facebook members as early as today, with plans for the full membership to have access in a matter of weeks. Facebook typically rolls out new services very slowly in this fashion.

Facebook revealed details on the broader gifting program on its blog late Wednesday afternoon. In addition to music, Facebook users can gift charity donations, e-cards and other things. A company spokeswoman said it looked at a number of digital music providers, but ultimately settled on Lala. It’s possible other music services may be involved in the future, but there are no immediate plans for including them.

This is the first real stab that Facebook has taken into the music space. The popular social networking service has been rumored for years to be interested in adding a music platform, but licensing issues and data reporting requirements have been said to stall the deal.

If anything, it’s a bigger win for Lala. The digital music service has quietly inserted itself as the back-end music engine for a number of Web sites this year, including the relaunched Billboard.com and Pitchfork, not to mention the rumored music search service expected from Google. Additional content streaming partnerships are expected in the weeks and months ahead.
